It was Jesus who said, “A prophet is not without honor, EXCEPT in his own country.”
That is a statement that fits in the case of Dallas School Board Trustee Carla Ranger.
Ranger has been a champion of education, community voice and free speech and served a a dynamic beacon of truth and conscience amidst madmen running the Dallas Independent School District.
Like many of the prophets before her, this modern prophetess now faces the grim reality of political gun play and “spiritual” assassination that seeks to take her out and ruin her focus and her purpose.
This week, Ranger was informed that her contract as District Director of Educational Partnerships at Dallas Community College District will not be renewed – effective August 31, 2009.
In her own words, she speaks the truth in love and uses the boldness of the Christ by calling out the motives behind the decisions not to renew her contract.
“It appears someone has ordered my removal,” she wrote on her Blog site. “There is also something about it that smells of politics.”
The big question is why and what has Ranger done so wrong to warrant such a rude, sudden and unceremonious exit from a job she has performed in and made difference for 20 years.
Carla Ranger was elected to the Dallas Independent School Board as a Trustee in June 2006.
She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Memphis with a Bachelor of Arts and received a Master of Arts from the University of Illinois.
Ranger is a tireless advocate for education and the importance of reading, which inspired her in 1999 to create what has become the very successful and nationally-recognized African American Read-In during Black History Month. A model for team/community building, the annual community event, held at the historic Majestic Theatre, attracts thousands from across the metroplex, encouraging students of all ages to discover the joy and rewards of reading. Her read-in team co-produced the Phillis Wheatley Awards and partners with the Harlem Book Fair in New York City and the Toulisoma We Read Book Fair and Arts Festival in Dallas.
With more than 25 years’ experience in higher education, Ranger is district director of Educational Partnerships for the Dallas County Community College District. She is a former dean of the Communications Division at Eastfield College and helped develop African American Family Day and Día De La Familia, Hispanic Family Day, at the college. She is a member of the Asian Council Advisory Committee and the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English.
Ranger has served on the Dallas ISD Education Task Force, the Texas Test Bias Review Committee, and the National Council on Black American Affairs. She has developed record numbers of jobs for students as a volunteer administrator for the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program. A founding board member of the pioneering Selena Butler Leadership Training Institute, she developed curriculum and taught classes to graduate and prepare hundreds of parents for school/community service.
Ranger is a proven public servant and youth and community advocate.
This decision is an outrage and the community should only come to the conclusion that something is “Rotten in Rotterdam”.
Is she being crucified because of her honest, bold speech and fighting to prevent school closures, call for financial accountability in DISD or is it because she called out the board on term limits and challenged trustees, leaders and school administration to operate with new improved ethical standards?
Ranger wrote that the decision was “sudden”, “unexpected” and “with no prior warning or reason” to be concerned.
“I have been an employee of DCCCD for 20 years and looked forward to retirement there in the years ahead,” she said. “My record has been exemplary.”
DCCD made a decision to release one of their best, most dedicated and experienced public servants.
What sense does that make Dallas? Ranger is a Professional. Ranger is Upstanding. Ranger is Impeccable. Ranger is a dedicated public servant. What more could you ask for when having someone of her caliber representing the DCCCD.
This is nothing more than retaliation by some in the Dallas business and educational circles who want to bring hardship on Ranger for her good works.
Like Christ and the apostles, she is being persecuted for being righteous and doing righteous things.
Shame on the Pontius Pilate's and Judas Iscariot's and Pharisees in DISD, DCCD and business circles consenting to her persecution and ordering she be sacrificed.
GOD don't like ugly and the truth will find you out!!!
“Those things done in darkness will soon be brought to light.”
This is not a case of “Father Forgive them for they know not what they do.”
They know what they are doing. Trying to silence community voice and people representation on the school board and the people's influence in her job.
In the same release, Ranger said of the decision. “This is difficult and hard to share. But when I think of all the challenges so many others must face in this life, I am encouraged,” she said. “While I do not fully understand it, I am reminded that somewhere in the good book it suggests that "Good soldiers must sometimes endure hard things."
Carla Ranger has nothing to be ashamed of. She has stood for the people and promoted true Democratic principles on the job and on the board. She is a good soldier and the public must stand up and help her as she has stood as a strong voice and pillar for us.
Ranger is a warrior who has stood with the people and fought for the people and now it is time for the public and people to stand up and demand that a corrupt politicians and back room bullying by those in business and educational circles be stopped!!!!
