Carolyn Ellis -
Houston Independent School District
Employee of the Month for September
HOUSTON- Carolyn Ellis works as the senior secretary in the Office of Academic Services (formerly known as School Administration), a position she has held for more than seven years. She first came to the district in 1990, when she served as a volunteer tutor at Albert Johnston Middle School. The following year, she was hired as a teacher's aide at Walter Fondren Middle School. Ellis has also served as a secretary for assistant principals and a Student Information Management Systems (SIMS) clerk. She was a member of a special school-improvement project team in 2001, and because of her SIMS certification, was responsible for reviewing student data from the schools the team was assigned.
As a senior secretary, Ellis provides support to and keeps the calendar of Academic Services General Manager Mark Smith, working with the various departments in tracking vendor contracts to completion, preparing the department's payroll, overseeing purchasing records, and setting up contracts for consultants.
Ellis, a native Houstonian, attended George Turner and Lucian Lockhart Elementary Schools, Miller Junior High School (now closed), and Evan Worthing High School. After graduation, she completed an Associate of Arts degree at Houston Community College System.
Prior to her employment at HISD, Ellis worked as a supervisor in Operator Services at AT&T for 17 years.
Ellis lives in Stafford and enjoys fishing, cooking, reading, singing, and serving as a greeter at her church. She has two sons and three grandchildren who live in Tacoma, Washington.
"In the eight years I have worked with Carolyn, I continue to be impressed by her ability to take care of the needs of so many individuals," said Academic Services General Manager Mark Smith. "Her warm demeanor is a great asset to the department and everyone who comes into contact with her. She quickly embraces new tasks and takes the time necessary to teach others. Many others in Academic Services rely on her daily to assist them in doing their jobs as well. Her ability to get things done is felt throughout the district."
"Carolyn is warm, efficient, and always willing to assist others, no matter what their position in the organization," added Director or Data Accountability Georgia McGlasson. "When I mention to her that I am looking for information, Carolyn is tireless in researching my inquiry and always follows up to let me know what she has learned."
"This is so well deserved," noted Assistant Superintendent of Special Populations Noelia Garza. "In all the years I have known her, and in my many administrative capacities, Carolyn has always remained constant in her caring, supportive attitude to everyone around her. In my mind, she exemplifies the true meaning of being "customer-oriented." HISD has many exceptional support staff, and she is definitely one of them."
